    Piirissaar

Piirissaar is located in the eastern part of Tartu County, in the middle of Lake Peipus. It is the largest of the islands on Lake Peipus. The island covers an area of 7.5 km² and is the 12th largest Estonian island. The island is divided into three villages: Piiri, Saare, and Tooni. About 30 people live on the island all year round. The inhabitants are mainly engaged in fishing and onion growing. The majority of the island’s inhabitants are Old Believers.

There is a small harbour shop and village shop on the island, but it is recommended that visitors to the island bring their own picnic basket with food and drink.

On Piirissaar you can get acquainted with the culture of the Old Believers and the way of life of an islander. The following are must-see attractions on the island:

    • The Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul
    • Three cemeteries
    • The Old Believers’ Museum
    • Piirissaar’s Titanic
    • Lõunarand (South Beach)

The whole of Piirissaar is a nature conservation area that offers interesting walking tours for every visitor to the island.

The new golden buses of Hansa Bussiliinid AS will take you on a comfortable and safe journey from Tartu to Laaksaare harbour and from Laaksaare harbour to Tartu.

The ferry Koidula, which was completed in 2009, and specially designed for Lake Peipus, transports you across the water. The ship can accommodate 50 passengers. Thirty-five (35) tickets can be purchased in advance and 15 tickets can be purchased on the spot at the harbour.
